Poyferré 1945 among Jane Anson’s favorites

News | 21 December 2023

Every year, renowned wine critic and journalist Jane Anson establishes her Top 50 Wines of the Year. We’re delighted to discover that Château Léoville Poyferré 1945 is among her selection for 2023!

We’re even prouder to be included as it’s the oldest vintage in the selection and one of the Top 10 Left Bank wines, scoring 94/100.

Jane Anson’s tasting notes:

🇬🇧 “Tasted in Melbourne at a wonderful Bordeaux wine lunch, this showed clear sweetness to the strawberry fruit, springing to life in the way that often happens in the final years of a very old wine.

Curls of smoke, undergrowth and tobacco leaf were the dominant aromatics at first, with osyter shell salinity the dominant flavour. White truffles, liquorice root followed soon after, and although acidity was evident on the finish, this had a softness and a whisperingly delicate structure. Already owned by the Cuvelier family at the time, as they arrived in 1920. Blend not recorded, re-corked at the château in 2000.”

A few words about the 1945 vintage

Didier Thomann, cellar master, describes this vintage as “(…) fabulous, one of the best vintages of the century, along with 1929 and 1947…”.

Challenging weather conditions, an extraordinary small crop…

  • A frosty, snowy winter began, ending with mild, rainy weather.
  • A dry and beautiful spring at the beginning, ending with a frosty month of May, foretelling small quantities.
  • June rainy and hot, reaching 36 degrees.
  • Dry, hot weather from mid-July to mid-August, ending with a rainy end to August, which was good for the harvest, but also caused a lot of disease.
